SAUCE FOR THE GOOSE AND SAUCE THE GANDER.

A3 I Mali VEfiSIOS OF THE PROVERB. A correspondent of The Week: of Toronto, discussing the Socialistic doctrine that " tenants on Irish estates should take care of themselves before paying rent," tells rather an interesting story. He says:— "How far this teaching is carried into effect may be judged by the following, which to me discloses a state of affairs in Inland that Canadians

could not dream of. A friend of mine, who if a native-born Irishman, for a number of jean resident in Canada, was on a riait this summer to the family seat in the Eastern part of Ireland. His family hare occupied the same holding for generations. The adjoining farm, consisting of 80 acres, had been under lease to a man for over 30 years, and under the regulations adopted a few years ago the rent had been reduced to 14s sterling (about $3.50) per acre. Two years ago the tenant sub-let the farm to a cousin ot my informant, at a rental of 20s ($4) per acre, and draws the rent regularly, but having become a member of the Land League he refuses to and does not pay a penny to the owner of the land. My friend remonstrated with him upon the glaring injustice, and pointed out the inconsistency of his charging and collecting rent, while he refused to pay any himself. Tenant number one said in reply to this that " he had paid rint long enough, am! wouldn't do it any longer." " Suppose my cousin should follow your example, and refuse to pay you ? " Oh," said he, " that would'nt do ; I must have my rint. I've got to lire somehow." Now this fellow has discarded labour of any kind, has become a prominent Land Leaguer in his district, and goes about with his dog and gun, while he enjoys an income of somethinglessthan SSOO per annum, which is as clearly the proceeds of robbery as if he were to overhaul the landlord on the highway and call upon him to stand and deliver."
