CULTIVATION OF AFRICAN DESERTS.
Itwill be remembered that some years ago Colonel Roudaire brought forward a proposal to transform some of the deserts in Africa into inland seas, the level of the soil being fit present about 80ft. below tbat of the Mediterranean. An alternative proposal was made by Colonel Lindas, who has actually commenced to work on these lines, and he has jusb presented to the French Academy of Science a report, in which he states tbat he has driven an artesian well in the desert to the depth of 300 ft, which is now discharging fresh water at the rate of 2000 gallons a minute, which suffices for the irrigation of 500 hectares. This area was a desert a year ago, and is now a fertile and well stocked district. A second artesian well is now being driven, to !extend this area of fertilisation.— Industries.
