THE LARK AND THE DAISY.

A little daisy, golden-eyed, With petals whit* and red, Un fended near the wav-s de grew, The soft green gnat her bed. Beyond a well-trimmed hawthorn hedge Bloomed rose and lily fair. The little daisy laughed," Tra-la !"

Binga through the summer air. " Tra-la !" the swelling long rings out—- " Tra-la!" The bright lark aings " Tra-la-la-la! "—then on the grass He rests his weary wings. The simple daisy laughed—' Tra-la! Oh, song of joy and light! For me he sings that hymn of praise ! " The lark soared out of sight. Alas, the joyful lark was caged In golden wires strong. And sadly from his prison bars Bang out his prison song ! A piece of turf they gare the bird, And there the daisy grew— Ob. joy in death to comfort him— Thirsting, to give him dew ! He heeded not the little flow'r With dew'dimmed golden eye, But. flutt'riiijj 'mid her cool green leaves, He laid him down to die. Eaos. THE LI«3HT OF LOTE. - Ob, lore is like the ' will-'o-the-wisp,' That light which leads astray. With its elfin glare, the fools who dare To trust its hiring ray." This I said, nor knew my words untrue, Ne'er baring felt love's pow'r; But I now revoke the words I spoke In that weak, foolish hour. For lore resembles a beacon light That glistens in 'he dark, Where the rocks abide, a fairhful guide, Unto the struggling bark. And as o'er life's sea, where dangers be From waTe to ware I hound. In the loving thine of eyes divine My beacon light is found.
