Lake District Acclimatisation

Society.

The' monthly meeting of the above Society wu held in the County Council Chambers, Queenstown, on the 12th instant, when there present Messrs L. Hotop (vice-president), H. M. Adair, B. R. Baird, L. de Beer and H. N. Firth (secretary). Minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed.

Outward correspondence was read and approved. Inward correspondence, read and received, comprised a letter from Ranger Mackin (enclosing account) asking for £ls 15s. in addition to £35 voted for hatching out some 125,000 more trout fry than the 100,000 stipulated. Also letter from the Colonial Treasurer, Sir Julius Vogel, (enclosing copy of correspondence with the Agent-General on the subject of the introdnction of fish ova) asking if the Society was prepared to take charge of any part of the ova, some of which—(namely, a shipment of salmon ova) would shortly arrive at Auckland. Sir Julius Vogel said that other kindred societies in the colony (namely 21) had been asked to take united action with regard to treating ova after their arrival.

Ik Mr Mac'kin's application, the meeting considered that the sum voted covered all liabilities for services; and it was therefore resolved, on the motion of Messrs Adair and De Beer—That Mr Mackin be paid the sum of £35, iu terms of the Society's letter of 25th September, 1885, being in full payment of his services as curator and ranger of this Society up to 31st March, 1886; and that he be requested to intimate to the Society at once whether he will continue in the service of the Society oil the same terms for the ensuing year, commencing Ist April, 1886. With regard to letter from the Colonial Treasurer, inemliers considered that the Society was not in a sufficiently good financial position to incur expense of transit of ova from Auckland to the Lakes. After discussion it was ordered that the Secretary be instructed to write to the Hon. the Colonial Treasurer rt salmon and other ova, stating that the Society would be pleased to undertake the hatching out of a small quantity of salmon ova, but that the data the Society had before them were insufficient for them to speak definitely on the point. A vote of thauks to the chair concluded the business.
