An important case under the Impounding Act was heard iu Dunediu lately. Charles Catchell was charged with having unlawfully rescued some cattle which had been impounded in Taieri County. The caw Was remanded from the Outram Court, in or lcr to allow his Worship to consider whether the County Council had power, under section 17 of the Act of ISS4, to authorise any person to impound cattle. He now lield that, for some extraordinary reason, which he could not ascertaiu, the Couutv Council of that county iu which the Counties Act was in force had no such power, and therefore the seizure of defendant's cattle by tiie county ranger was not legal, and defendant's rescue of the same was not unlawful. The case was dismissed.
