Selected Poetry.

BT THE SEA.

We wandered o'er the shining sands One Summer day, my friend and I, our hearts united m our band*, And lightly did the momenta fly.

We watel ed the outward ships go by With rtately masts and canvas white, Till in the distance sea and sky Received and shut them from our signt.

Red burned the «unset in the West, And o'er the waters far away, Bright aa a path to endless rest, A heavenward track of glory lay.

Sweet thoughts in either heart awoks, Kespon.-ive to old Ocean s psalm ; No jarring note of discord br.>ke Accroes the deep harmonious calm.

It was an hour from Eden lent— A gift, unboiled by earth's alloy, Of drep, full measureless content, Whose very memory is a joy.

It filled our clouded souls with light : They yearned with longing* to be free, And took, I think, amoments flight Beyond the bounds of earth aud sea.

And oh, the bliss of that short glance Where sou s redeemed from bondage dwell! What words can gie it utterance — What songs its depth cf sweetness tell ? # • • • •

Now, when we fiud our pathways strep, And daily crosses hard to hear, Dear friend, be glad our hearts can keep Vndimmed bv time these momeuts fair! SrgANNA J.
