The P. and 0. Company's present mail contracts will expire at the end of January, 1888, the necessary two years' notice having Iteen given. The Imperial authorities are now inviting tenders for a federated ocean mail service in which the principle of payment hy results will supersede the present system under which each colony pa}a lanje subsidies for separate services. This scheme is the one aereed to by the different colonies, and which Mr R. C. Baker, of South Australia, was instructed to proceed to Kngland for the purpose of bringing under the uotice of the Imperial postal authorities.
