Oh! steady, skilful band thai cnt so deep. And stayed not for those cries that pierced my heart! My boy would trust thee faithful hold to seep, Through dark or danger, for thou gentle art. Gentle and soft to clasp in friendly cresting, Gentle and still to close the chamber door; Gentle and firm to feel the poor pulse beating. Gentle and firm to press the poor knee p'er, Gentlest and firm when knife and knee are meeting, And thou art healing when thou voundes* •ore! Oh, Heavenly hand! Thou oft hast brought' me pain, And stayed not for the quivering of my heart! Would I could trust Thee, yet and yet again—for Thou art gentler than that other art. M.
