London, undated. Disturbances have arisen between Russians and CLinesc on frontier. Melbourne, undated. The Kelly gang entered Geraldine and stuck up the bank there, taking £2,000. They imprisoned the local police and took their horses, arms and animation. It is believed they have re-crossed the borders iuto Victoria.
The old log lock-up, erected by Mr Reea in 18G3 for the Government, has been pulled down by order of the Works Department. Tenders are to be called for a stone structure in lieu thereof. We hope that the plans will allow of the work being done for the sum allocated-some £4UO pounds, we believe. It is welcome intelligence that Ministers propose to open a block of terrace land on Mr Butement'a run, and another block of land on Howell's and Trotter's stations below Kingston. Both are most suitable areas for farming purposes, and they will be probably thrown open under the Agricultural Lease Regulations of the Mines Act, 187 G. These blocks will command much attention. Messrs Edgar, Hicks and Smith, of the County Council, proceeded yesterday to survey the proposed alteration of the site for the new bridge over the Kawarau River, as suggested by Mr Stout at the interview on Monday. The crossing is at a place below the Arrow Bluffs. At No. 2 site, two miles nearer Owens' Ferry, the span of the bridge Would be about 130 feet. At the new site it will be 280 feet. By the adoption of this last crossing, two other bridges would have to be erected -one at the Swiftburn, at a cost of £10)0 with approaches, and one at the Arrow Junction. The road once made would, however, be a good one, requiring little maintenance. The Government, seeing the immense advantages of the change to the public, have offered to supplement the extra expenditure over £9,000 by £ to £ grant-in-aid. It remains to be seen what action the Council will take; but we may point out that delays are dangerous, and that unless prompt action is taken one way or another, the original vote of £B,OOO may be lost a ltogether.
