London, February 5. A St. Petersburgh despatch to the Tdcgraph says that the wouderful successes of the British forces in Afganistau have completely upset all Russian calculations, as it was the general belief that our troops would meet with a stout resistance or perish ill the snow. Lord Augustus Loftus, late ambassador of St. Peteisburgh, has been appoin ed Gov e nor of New South Wales. February 6. In consequence of the plague, three weeks' quarantine is order-d at Malta against arrivals from Southern Russia, and increasing rigoious measures aie being taken against the advance of the plague 'on the frontiers of Germany, Austria and Turkey, and into the polls of Italy. Sydney, February 8. The return match with the English Gentlemen was commenced yesterday, and when the stumps were drawn in the evening the Englishmen had scored 2C7 in their first innim'S, and two ot the wickets of the New South Wales team had fallen for s.**. The New Sou h Wales team in fieir firtt innings to-day scored 177, and in th> second 18 with the loss of one wicket. Murdoch was given run out by the English umpire, and the decision was challenged by the crowd. Much dissatisfaction w.is expressed, the ground was rushed, and Lord Harris was assaulted. Flay was stopped, and will be resumed on Monday.
