CRUSHED BY A CASK OF BEER. [Per Pbes9 Association.] WAIROA, December 28. A Maori named Tene Putaranui died in the hospital on Sunday ns a result of being crushed by a cask of oeor in a dray in some manner not yet explained. An inquest was opened on Sunday, and after formal evidence was adjourned for a week.

SHOT IN THE FACE. [Per Press Association/] HASTINGS, .December 38. Willio Lawson, aged about twelve, received a discharge from a shotgun iu the face. The injuries may result iu tho loss of an eye. Lawson and two others got hold of a _ shot gun, and while Lawson was fixing a target, tho gun which was lying on the ground went off. It is not known by what meanA tho gnn was discharged. The lad was convoyed to Wellington for treatment by a specialist.
