THE WHEAT QUESTION.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —May I say a few words on this question or wheat supply, or nonsupply? The farmers claim to be the backbone of the country. Perhaps <they are (although my boy, who goes to East Christchurch school, says the Southern Alps are the backbone of the country). Well, if the farmers cannot, or will not, grow sufficient wheat, in a country which you say gives an average of thirty-live bushels to the acre, to supply tho needs of tho population, is not that a serious reflection. on the backbone? Do you not think the Prime Minister and the Minister of Agriculture should have a heart-to-heart talk with the backbono and point out that it is not acting up to its anatomical obligations?—-! am, eo., FARMER'S FRIEND.
