Air R. Hoppy will bo a candidate t<J) fill the vacancy on the City Council* caused by the death of Mr W. Nichoila. Mr A. J. C. Talbot, Superintendent of Telegraphs at Wellington who has been visiting Christchurch left for Wellington last evening. Dr H. T. D. Acland has been appointed a member of the Board of Governors of Christ’s College, in place of Dean Harper, who has resigned. A Wellington Press Association message states that Sir John Salmond, who was recently appointed a temporary Judge, was sworn in yesterday morning and took his seat on the Bcncn. Commander Alilner and Lieutenants Denham and Richards, of H-AI.S. Renown, left on a visit to Alount Cook on Friday. Captain Barker and Lieutenant Robinson left • Christchurch yesterday to join them there. At the meeting of the Canterbury. Swimming Cbntre, last evening, Air E. Eldridge was presented _ with tv ti availing rug on the occasion of his departure from Christchurch. The president, Air W. E. Simes, in making the presentation, referred to the sterling service of Mr Eldridge to tho centre as treasurer, starter and in various other capacities. The chairman’s remarks were warmly endorsed by members. Air G. R. Wise, who died as the result of an accident last week, was at one time sub-editor and publisher of the " Mercantile Gazette of New Zealand.’’ Subsequently he practised as a solicitor at Wellington. Prior to joining the staff of the “Alcrcantile Gazette,” Air Wise was on the office staff of Air F. H. Bruges and for many years he served with Air T. G. Russell. On account of failing eyesight Air Wise gave up the legal profession and took up farming at Papanui, which lie carried on until his death.
