CITY’S ADDRESS.

Tlie address of welcome to ho prevented to the Prince to-day by the Mayor is a beautiful work of art. It is suspended by a silken cord attached to a polished bar of New Zealand red birch, on the ends of which are two pieces of greenstone, beautifully turned. The corner of the address is a pieco of royal blue skin bearing ip gold the arms'of the city surmounted bv two gargoyles and the motto, “ Britons hold your own.” The address itself is on vellum, beautifully worked. There is a border of whito clematis, and nikau palms, flax and cabbage trees, with a nice touch of colour supplied by a spray of red kowhai. Tho wording of tho address is interspersed with Maori carving, and at each of the four corners there is a Maori tiki, the top ones being “Haeremai” and the bottom ones “ Kia ora”'tikis. The address is enclosed in white silk, with a polished bar at the bottom.. The whole effect is very pleasing. Tho address is signed only by the Mayor aucl town clerk. f FREEDOM OF THE CITY. A special meeting of the City Council was held on tho railway station before the Royal train arrived last night, the Mayor presiding. Ifc was decided, on tho motion of Councillor J. O- Jameson, seconded by Councillor A. Williams, that a roll of honorary free men of the City Council of Christchurch should be opefied, and, on the motion of Councillor Jameson, seconded by Councillor Andrews, that the Prince should be presented with tho freedom of the city. The document conferring tho freedom will be signed by the Mayor and councillors and will he handed to his Royal Highness .to-day.
