A private conference was held yesterday afternoon between representatives of tho Christchurch Tramway Board and the Christchurch Tramway Employees' Union, to consider the mon*. application for a new agreement. Th© union has demanded a substantial increase in wages for the men, on tho grounds that the present waxes are insufficient to enable tramway men to live without having to work overtime. The union is asking Is 8d per hour for first-year conductors, who at present are receiving about 3s 3Jd ner h<ur. Other demands aro:—Second-year (and after) conductors Is 10d, first-year motor-men Is lOd, eecond-year (and after) motormen 2s. For tradesmen ant. electricians 23 6d an hour is asked, and a proposal is also made to increasetho Sunday rate of pay from time and a half to double time.
