Sir James Carroll, who was attacked by influenza in Christchurch during race week, is reported to be getting along very satisfactorily.

Mr A. W. Rutherford, jun., who was attacked with influenza while visiting Christchureh for Carnival Week, is still confined to his bed. He had a serious attack of the malady but he is now making slow progress towards recovery. Yesterday a military funeral was accorded Quarter-master-Sergeant Gordon Goodrich, who died in tho Queen Mary Hospital, Hanmep,-on Sunday last. The funeral tool*' place at the Linwood Cemetery. The firing party consisted of returned soldiers, in charge of Sergeant-Major Brandt. Tho Rev 0. E. Ward officiated at the graveside, and after the burial service the firing party iked a salute of three volleys over the grave Mr John E. Vernon, rector of Palmerston North High School, died on Friday evening. Air Vernon was born in Edinburgh in 1862, and educated at the famous George Watson's College, in which lie finally became'a teacher. He was demonstrator in mathematics to Professor Chrystal at the Edinburgh University. Ho came to New Zealand in 1887, and lauded at Port Chalmers. He was lirst in charge of the secondary work at the Waimate High School, after which he was head of the Palmerston South District High School. H(>. then occupied the position of first assistant at the Invercargill High School, and wont to Palmcrston North in 1902 to take charge of the then College Street District High School. When the Palmerston High School was established he was appointed rector, and held tho position till his demise. Mr Vernon held the degrees of M.A. and B.Se. He took a keen interest in Freemasonry, and was a P.M. of Lodge Manawatu Kilwinning. »
