F. Wilson, People's Palace, returned soldier, and W. A. Miller, Christchurch Hospital, night porter, enlisted in Christchurch on Saturday. In connection with recent allegations of tohungnism at tho Chathams it was expected that ceftain Maoris would bo on board tho Tutanekai, which arrived at Wellington yesterday. However, they did not arrive A Press Association telegram states that forty-four Maori reservists were arrested by Sergeant Cowan and four constables at Mercer on Saturday, for alleged disobedienco of tho Military Service Act. No resistance was shown. Tho party, which included Tonga Mahuta, a brother of "King" Rata, was takon to Narrow Neck camp. Tho week-end sale of home-made food supplies at tho Red Cross Sales Depot, Cathedral Square, was in charge of the ladies of St Paul's congregation, and resulted in the sum of £35 being added to the Bed Cross funds. The Hon G. W. Russell said that at ono .time such undesirable places had existed in Auckland and Wellington, but it was new to him to hear of their existence in Christchurch. Tho fifty-second annual report of tho Union Rowing Club, which frill bo presented at tho club's annual meeting on {September 9, records a membership of 300, ■ including 120 members absent, on active service. In last season s ' new member campaign" 138 members were secured. Prizes in this connection were awarded to T. Grcnfell (42 members), F. Furrell (32), and D. Hanna (24). A statement as to the employment by the Government of superannuated Civil Servants was made on Friday by the Mayor of Auckland, Mr Gunson, who said ho was in possession of t) <i names of five superannuated men who were employed in one office alone in Auckland. Ho thought the Government should investigate the matter, to ensure that justice was done to returned soldiers, amongst whom he believed that men suitable for most vacant positions could bo found. He had been informed that a local firm, vvhioh received applications from sixteen returned soldiers for a position, had given it to a man who had not been on active service. He considered that Bpecial consideration should be given to capable returned soldiers, who had been wounded or impaired in health by reason of their service. in his address on "Public Health" to tho Workers' Educational Association on Saturday evening, it ho Hon G. W. Russell commented on the fact that few legacies had been left to the Hospital by the rich men of the province. Auckland and other centres had been much more fortunate in this respect. Ho expressed a hope that others would emulate Miss Chalmers, ,to whose liberality the province was indebted for a very fine block of buildings. > He hoped some of the province's aires would lose no time in paying a visit to their lawyers and arranging tha*, say £IO,OOO of their wealth should ultimately pass into the coffers of the Hospital 'Board. Ho would recommend for their study the words he once read on a tombstone, since they contain much food for thought: " What I give 1 have, what I gave I had, what I kept I lost." (Applause.)

Mrs H. R. Smith's "Pom-Pom Pierrots" visited Irwell on Friday and gave an entertainment in aid of tho Lady Liverpool Fund in the grain store of tho Farmers' Co-operative Association. The gathering was tho largest held in Irwell. The sum of £43 was paid for admission. Mr W. E. Simes auctioneered a cushion made by a wounded soldier in the Christchurch Hospital. It was sold several times, and realised £63, and was sold again permanentlv to Mr M'Millan for £17.. The total proceeds of tho entertainment were £123. The Mayor and Mrs Holland addressed those present, and Mr H. R. Smith (Town Clerk) was amongst the visitors. Tho gathering was organised by Mrs Young, a local resident. Mrs Smith has obtained tho following sums for cushions made by the same soldier and soM at other entertainments:—Dunsanch'l, £2O; Kaiapoi, £l4; Chertsey, £l4; Caledonian Society's concert, £l2 10s 9d. The sums are for tho Christmas Parcels Fund.

The Wellington Rugby representatives defeatod the Canterbury fifteen in a sterling game on Saturday. Speaking before the "Workers' Educational Association on Saturday evening, tho Hon G. W. Russell said that in ono of the institutions under the control of his Department was an old lady who had readied the ago of 107 years. She was an inveterate smoker, but ho could not say whether this was in any way responsible for her longevity.

A search was conducted in the neighbourhood of Lincoln and Grcenpark yesterday for the missing young woman. Gladys Jull, who left her home in Sydenham* some weeks ago, and has not since been seen. The Lincoln constable was assisted yesterday by two mon from headquarters, and by relatives of tho missing girl. Up till late last night no report had been received from tho party. It is not. often that a vessel puts out from port without the ship's papers, but this accident befell the ferry steamer Maori on Saturday evening. Tho vessel left the wharf at about. 8 p.m., and to the surprise of everyone about the waterfront, returned about an hour later, having got some distance outsiclo the Heads before the omission was discovered.
