PERSONAL NOTES. Mr 6. M. Clarke, Styx, has received a letter from Lieutenant L. H. Denniston giving particulars of the death of Mr Clarke's son, Rifleman George Arthur Clarke. "I write to express to you my great sympathy in the loss of your son George, states Lieutenant J>enniston. "He was in my platoon and was also my batman, and so I had particular opportunities of knowing him and appreciating him. Ho. was always a great worker and cheerful—two facts which made him a very popular member of our platoon, and I can assure you his loss is very keenly felt by all. As you may have heard, he was walking down the road from the cookhouse to his " bivrie' when he was struck hy a splinter from a shell in tho left side. Everything was done to get him as quickly as possible to a base dressing station, but unfortunately nothing could be done for him, and' ho died between the field dressing station and the base station. He was buried on the next day in the military cemetery. I have arran.o-ed for a more substantial cross than that usually provided, and his full name and particulars will be entered on that. The O.C. the company (Major Barrowclough) asks me to say that your eon had been on company headquarters for some time and that he had found him a particularly nice fellow and very conscientious in his work, no matter what danger was connected with it."

Rifleman L. D. Spicer. a son of Mrs W. Spicer, 152, Fitzgerald Street, has been wounded bv gunshot in the right leg. He left with the Fourth Battalion of the Rifle Brigade, and has seen three years' service in Franco. Prior to enlisting he was employed at Mr W. Robson's woolworks. He was a keen cricketer and Rugby player. Mr H. J. Harrison, Done, has received advice that his son, Lnnce-Cbr-poral Dudley F. Harrison, has been wounded for the second time.
