PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

CHILDREN’S PRIZE ESSAYS. There was a large gathering in the hall of the Y.M.C.A. rooms last night in connection with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and for the reading of essays on the aim of the association written by school children. Mr J. W. Watson was in the chair and introduced Mr J. W. Howell, who delivered an interesting address on tho objects of the society. At its conclusion Miss Lucy Cowan read twelve of tho essays contributed, and after tho distribution of tho prizes her pupils contributed a pleasing programme of recitation, song and dance. The list of prize winners who had received their prizes in tho schools was also read. Professor Blunt’s report was road on the essays which had been submitted to him for adjudication, the following being the award :• Upper.—l and special, C. Savers, Sydenham, Standard YI.; 2, Keith Werry, West Christchurch, Standard V.; 3, Harry Hyde, Wcolaton: 4, Mannio Ellis, Edst Christchurch, Standard VI; 5, A. Richards, Riccarlon, Standard VI.; 6, Irene Brace, Elmwood, Standard Y.T . Lower. —1, Ruth Isobel Slater, Elmwood, Standard IV. j 2. GoTtie Bachelor, Richmond, Standard IV.; 3, Lilian Artie, Cashmere 4, James Brownlee, West Chidstclrurcfi, Standard IT.; 5, N. Mec.gregor, Sydenham, Standard III.; G, Merrick Horton. St Albans. Standard 1., who also for, his youth was awarded -a special prize. After tho usual votes of thanks the meeting closed with tho National Anthem.
