Hughio Mehegan, ex-champion boxet of Australia, died in hospital in France. (Hughio Mehegan was one of the best-known of latter day Australian boxers. Born on August 26, 1886, ho made his first appearance in the ring in 1903. He won the light-weight championship of Australia from Jack M’Gowan, and held the title for several years, meeting all comers. 11l 1912 he visited England, and on September 16 defeated Matt Wells on a foul. On December 16 lie met Freddie Welsh foe the world’s championship and £IOOO, and lost on points, and also lost a re* turn match with Wells on points. Returning to Australia he met Wells tc decido the rubber on August 9, 1913, at tho Sydney Stadium, before a crowd that was larger than that which witnessed the Bums-Johnston oontest m tlw same place. Wells won on points. Mehegan was not a polished boxer, but lie was strong and aggressive, and usually won his battles by forceful infighting. He was a great favourite at the height of his career, and his death will be regretted by a very large circle of sports men.)
