NEW BRIGHTON GALA.

. •> A largely attended and representative gathering was held in the Now Brighton Counei} Chambers on Saturday evening to make arrangements for the annual gala. In the unavoidable absence of the Mayor (Mr F. Kibblewhite) through his indisposition, Mr J. A. Flesher occupied the chair. After discussion, January 19 was fixed as the date as being most suitable for the beach and children's holidays. Messrs R. Browning and J. Ainger were elected joint secretaries and treasurers. Mr G. Anderson moved that half the profits of the gala should bo/devoted to Red Cross Funds, and half to a beach improvement fund. Now Brighton, he said, had /'done well for all war funds during the past. three years and he thought the time had arrived to do something for beach improvement alao. ■"• Mr W-. A. Drake, in seconding the motion, said they had a perfect rig-lit to ask Christchurch people this year lb assist to improve their .playground. An amendment, moved by Mr A. Hulme, and supported bv Messrs C. H. Winny, E. Eastwood and J. P. Whatman, to devote tho profits in thirds to Red. Cross, Lady Liverpool and beach improvement, was lost, and the motion was carried. Officers were elected as follows:—Patron, Hon G. TV. Russell; president, the Mayor (Mr ' F.- Kibblewhite); rice-prcsidente, the past Mayors; vice-chairman, Mr TV. A. Drake. All present were elected a ffenera! committee. Chairmen of committees ,witu power to elect their own committee, and report names to tho next meeting, were elected as follows:—Sand design, Mr E. Laneford; children's sports, Messrs H. Greenfield! and A. W. Owles; surprise packets and lucky numbers, Messrs W. A. Drake and P. 0. Beaumont; bran tubs, Messrs G. Dennis and O. Hempleman; aquatic events, Messrs B. S. Knox and A. R-. Blank; hoopla, Mr G. L. Cull; other amusements, Mr G. Anderson; : decorating committee, Mr G. Burmeister; advertising and collecting. Mr F. Kibblewhite; produce and flowers, Bed Cross ladies; North Brighton supervisor. Mr J. P. Whatman; ice cream and soft drinks, Mr T.'Cok; procession, Mt A. P. Hopkins. * Tlm matter of riving the members of the Pacific Club a definite solo engagement, was left in the hands-of Mr G-. Andean. A heartv vote of thanks to Mr Flesher for his attendance and help was carried by acclamation.
