Sir John Denniston returned from Wellington on Saturday. Mr J. Craigie, M.P., was a passenger by the ferry steamer from the north on Saturday.
Mr H. J. Beswick, Mr W; Reece and Colonel Cooper arrived from Wellington on Saturday.
Sergeant G. B. Chrystall, of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles, has obtained a commission in the Imperial Army.
Mr Charles Parson; the well-known magician and ventriloquist, who rccentlv gave a performance m the Opera House, with the Auto Pierrot Troupe, «has passed for active sen-ice, and will :ieave for Trentham very shortly.
Sir Joseph "Ward arrived in Christchurch from the south on Saturday evening and went on to "Wellington. He was accompanied by Lady "Ward. He will leave Wellington for the north in the middle of this week and will return to Christchurch in . about ten days.
The London correspondent of the " Lvtteflton Times" states that the following have completed their course of instruction with, the Royal Flying Corps and are struck off the strength of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force as from the date of their departure from New Zealand. June 1917:—Privates H. L. Bayly, T. Carr, A. E. Cheal and R. J. Thompson.
Flight-Lieu tenant B\ E. Harkness, a young New Zealand airman who was interned in 'Holland last year, is now on a visit to" New Zealand on parole, states the Auckland correspondent of the "/Post." Lieutenant Ha.rkness went to England in 1915. and went into training at Hendon. He received a commission in the Royal Naval Air Service, and afterwards completed his training at several schools in England. Ho went to the western front early in 1916, and was engaged in flying there for several months. He was awarded tho. Distinguished Service Cross for valuable services rendered in the bombing of a German Zenoelin shed at Brussels. Lieutenant Harkness had the ill hick an September, 1916, to be forced to descend on Dutch soil. A short time ago he was allowed to leave for England, and subsequently he was given extended leave in order, to visit New Zealand.
