Chief Detective Bishdp. now stationed in Dunedin, is visiting Cb.rii.tchurch.

Tho Hon D. Bnddo, M.P., left Christchurch last evening on a visit to Wellington and Hawke's Bay. Letters received in Auckland from Bishop Cleary, who is visiting Great Britain, states that ho recently travelled through tho North of Ireland, and that his health has much improved.

At last ovening's meeting of the Heathcote County Council a- resolution of appreciation of Mr E. J. Barnes's services during the past five years as ctfanty engineer was unanimously agreed to. Mr H. Wolfe, of the Christchurch Tourist Bureau, is on annual leave, and is visiting the Buller and Otira Gorge district in order to see what tourist facilities are necessary for the greater development of tho district as a holiday resort. ,

On Monday he was taken to the Nelson Hospital, and died -next day. He was a single man, and his parents reside at Hobart. At a meeting of the Manawatu Philosophical Society last week, the president, Mr J. W. Poynton, referred to the death of Dr A. A. Martin, of Palmerston North, and Mr Poynton suggested that a deputation from the society should meet the Mayor with the object of calling a public meeting to consider the erection of a memorial. He said that he thought the memorial should take the form of a children's ward This would be more fitting than tho ordinary form of memorial, and would be a reminder that every infant life should be conserved to assist in making good the waste of life in the war.
