A thirty-page Gazette containing th« honours granted includes Sergeant Claude Charles Castleton, of an Australian machine-gun company, who received the Victoria Cross. During an attack on the enemy trenches the in-
irantry was temporarily driven back b> the intense machine-gun ' fire. Many British wounded wore left in jSo Man s Land, lying in shell holes. Sergeant Dastleton went out twice in face of intense fire and brought a wounded man £ on his back. Ho was bringing in * third when he was himself hit m tho back and killed instantly. Ho set a splendid example by his courage and ielf-sacrifice. . Eleven other Victoria Crosses were awarded, including Private Albert Hill, of the Welsh Fusiliers, who, when Burrounded by twenty of the , ene . rav ' attacked them with bombs and killed Sr wounded a number. Ho then fought is way back to tho British lines.
