INQUEST ADJOURNED.

An inquest was opened at the. Hospital, before Mr T- A. B. Bailev, S.M., last evening, touching the death of William R. Paterson, of Belfast, forty-three years of age, pattern maker, who was found lying alongside the railway track at Papanui on Sunday morning, having apparently fallen off a train on Saturday night. .James Paterson, pattern maker, residing at IST. Redruth Avenue, Spreydon, said that deceased was his brother, and was a pattern maker at the Belfast Freezing Works, living at Belfast. Witness knew nothing about the accident. His brothor was it sober man. Dr William Hunter Will, house surgeon at the Hospital, said that Paterson was admitted on Sunday, suffering from injuries to the head and neck. Ho was unconscious, and an examination proved that he was suffering from a fracture at the base of the skull. Dr Guthrie saw Paterson, and was of the same opinion. He never properly ro : gained consciousness, and died at 5.20 p.m. on Wednesday, the cause of death being fracture of the baso of the skull. At this stage the inquest was adjourned to Wednesday, at 3 p.m., at tho Courthouse, pending inquiries for further evidence as to how Paterson was found and how lie came to fall off the train.
