THE PERSONAL CANVASS.

• As the outcome of the apathy shown by the public towards the Government's personal canvass scheme, the Lyttelton Borough Council some three weeks ago entrusted the work .to two paid canvassers, and at the meeting of tho council last night a report was tabled showing the results of the operations. In:all, stated'-the report, some 702 houses had been visited, mid in a number of instances it was found that the National Registration cards had not been filled in. In. four cases only had tbo canvassers been confronted with absolute refusals to furnish information. The canvassers drew attention to the fact that the number of enlistments did not altogether represent what the borough had done, as it was understood that a larffe number of local and seafaring men bad enlisted prior to November last. On the local roll supplied it was found, during the course of -inquiries, that some fifty names belonged to other districts, while the number of cards received from ' Cbnstchnrcn and other districts amounted to fifteen. _ A tabulated form, as the result of information obtained, .was shown thus: ■Number on roll . . . .
