BONUS TO CIVIL SERVANTS.

TO THE JSDITOtt. , Sir, —I suppose Sir Joseph Ward s "lump sum ' bonus is to be arranged on the usual plan, namely, so that those already receiving the largest wages will also receive the largest bonus. Now, sir, this bonus is not altogether a reward of merit, but is largely a compassionate allowance. Would it not be a fair tiling to regulate tho size of the bonus according to tho number of children that each man has to maintain? For it is on the large families that the cost of living is pressing so cruelly. People with no children and single folk are not really suffering through the higher cost of living (unless the war has also reduced their income) and no portion of the £4QT/,oooof State money should go to them.—l am, etc., A SQUARE DEAL.
