COUNTY COUNCILS.

WAIMAIRI. The Waimairi County Council met yes-terday;-present—Messrs S. A. Staples (chairman). S. Bullock, W. Nicholls, R. W. Hawke, W. P. Spencer, F. Sisson and J. Fitzpatrick. 'Mr H. Harris, on behalf of the Belfast ratepayers, asked whether the council would act as trustees to the Belfast Public Hall and Library. There were at the beginning four trustees, but now there was only one. It was . decided to defer the matter until thel next meeting,, when thore would be a full -attendance of members.

A letter was received from the chairman of a public meeting of the residents in the vicinity of the old North Avon Road Board office, asking for permission to use the office for patriotic purposes. ' The chairman of the council and the member for the riding were appointed to report on the matter at the next meeting. Messrs Taylor and Cumngham wrote, on behalf of Mr Mark Arbunclc. claiming £lB5 7s lOd for land taken under the Public Works Act. The letter was received. It was decided that in future no persons should be allowed to take shingle from the shingle pits without permission of the council.

A letter was received from the Whaienui Bath Committee, asking for a donation to the Coronation baths. It, was decided to reply that the council could not at present see. its way clear to give n donation. It was resolved to continue the donation to the Belgium Fund as long as it would be required. A report was received (rom the conference of local bodies, at which it was decided to approach tho Christchurch Fire Board with regard to protection, and Mr Bullock was elected as the council's representative at a deputation to the Fire Board. It was decided to write to tho New Brighton Trotting Club, calling attention to the remarks made by the Health Officer concerning the sanitation of some of the buildings erected on the racecourse.
