SUMNER DRAINAGE.

SCHEME SUBMITTED BY CONSULTING. ENGINEER. For some months past the Sumner Borough Council has been dealing with the important.problem of drainage for the borough. At a special meeting of the council last night, over which, in the absence of the Mayor, Councillor J. Barr presided, the consulting engineer, Mr A. Slinger, engineer to the Dnnedin Drainage Board, presented his report on the drainage requirements of the borough. Mr Slinger stated that he had visited both Redcliffs and Sumner and after due consideration of all matters concerning the levels, the subsoil and the configuration of the locality generally, he unhesitatingly recommended the adoption of the report to be.submit ted. Amongst the outstanding features of the scheme were:—(a) The collection of the sewage at the main pumping station to be erected near the present tram terminus; (b) the pumping of this through a rising main to an outfall at Whitewash Head; and (c) a subsidiary pumping station to be erected at RedclifTs', to force the sewage from that area into the Sumner mains, thereby assisting advantageously - to provide an cfßcieniTAush for the latter main. Mr Slinger emphasised the .outstanding value of such a locality as Whitewash Heads. He had seen no place in Now Zealand more Suitable for an outfall. As regarded the engineering difficulties stated that there were Hone of any great importance. The only trouble was the subsoil of sand and water, and he proposed to get over that by using cast iron pipes. Tho whole scheme resolved itself into one of £s. d.; but he had considered this, and bad so prepared his report, that, should tho council liot he prepared to adopt it as a whole, they could put in hand such portions as necessity deemed advisable, and as finance permitted. At the. conclusion of his address Mr Slinger answered several questions put by the councillors present, and was afterwards accorded a very hearty vote of thanks for his lucid explanation. The council will meet at an early date for the purpose of dealing exhaustively with the whole of the proposal.
