SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. The conditions were ideal at Riccarton on Saturday morning -while training operations were in progress, the air being mild, with no wind. The plough track was in excellent order, everything being favourable for fast times.

The reverse workers were the first to aiako their appearance. Wardancer and Good Hope opened proceedings with a spin over six furlongs, which they left behind in lmin 18sec, Wardancer having an advantage at the finish. Xanthos, with Emperndor as. a companion, reeled off iive furlongs in lmin- 2 3-osee, and the pair was easing off at the end of six furlongs, which occupied lmin 17 2-osec. Flying Start, idone, was responsible for fivo furlongs in lmin 2 l-ssec, finishing up his task well. Bimeter, going freely, sprinted the- last four of five furlongs in 49 4-o bee. Warstep and Snub were associated over a milo and a half. They began slowly, tho first three furlongs occupying 40sec, but they got to the end of a mile in lmin 43 3-osec, and u mile and a quarter in 2min 10 l-sseo, finishing up the full journey in 2min 38 2-ssec. The pair were going strongly at the end, the effort being in every way satisfactory. Wisebird and San Sebastian were given a strong working gallop over seven furlongs, while Ticino was restricted to easy pacing.

There was not much of interest in the. other work before breakfast. Glee and Ardenvhor sprinted half a mile in 50 4-osec, .while Red Knight boat Luland over five furlongs in lmin 4 l-ssec. Scotcli Melody wound up seven furlongs pleasingly in lmin 31 4-ssec. Sspecialform was going better than Encore at the end of six furlongs, which occupied lmin 17sec. The first of the touring contingents for the holiday meetings will leave lliccarton on Thursday, Allien G. Murray Aynsloy, with Warstep, Snub and Wardancer, and H. Cutts, with Flying Start, Wisebird, San Sebastian and

Good Hope, will leave for the north, to compete at the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting. R. J. Mason expects to leave for Auckland with his team one day this week, but the exact date of his departure has not been fixed. He will probably take Bimeter, Xanthos and Greenstreet. The Yaldhurst team for the Auckland Racing Club's meeting will probably consist of The Toff, Koesian, Wishful, Halina and Mountain Dream. Their trainer, R. D. O'Donnei!, will probably leave for the north on Thursday. Bore is going on nicely in his track work at Riccnrton. Though still showing slight signs of fractiousness at times, he has improved considerably in that respect, having evidently benefited bv the course of jumping he has Una lately. He will make his first appearance in a hurdle race at the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting this month, and it is expected that he will show up creditably. Emperador has been galloping in his best style during the last few weeks, showing all his old brilliancy over short course*. Ho has a fine race record, having kept Mr G. D. Greenwoods colours prominent in many important ©vents during the past three seasons. Occasionally he shows signs of lameness, but he soon throws off the trouble again and his days of usefulness seem far from over yet; in fact, his track work suggests that h© may be seen to advantage before the season is mucl further advanced. St Ewo fell while, being unloaded j from the train at Sockburn, after competing at the Methvon meeting on Thursday. She sustained some injuries to her knees, and as a result, she will have to be given a spel! bofore she is able to do any tvork again. The two-year-old colts Kilbrogan, by Kilbroiiey—Showano, and Rilboy, by Kilbroney—Cyre, have gone into J. H. Preiser's stable at Porirua. The colts are still owned by Mr J. B. Reid, for whom they have been trained at Riccarton up till now by M. Hobbs, and they have bean transferred to Porirua in order to secure the benefits of the beach and the hills. Mr Reid has had previous experience of Porirua, as he had Mowbray and Salzburg there for a time, about two years- ago. Flavol, who has won oveT hurdles in Sydney and Melbourne this season, did several seasons at the stud in Tasmania, where he was recently represented by a winner. ! At Gosford, New South Wales, this month, the Stewards' Mile was won by the New Zealand-bred Canute, by CharI lemagne ll.—Lady Helen. In the early E' art of his career Canute was raced y Mr G. D. Greenwood, and ho was taken to Australia by Mr D. Thompson, ; tho owner of North East. The aged maro Maple Leaf, by Can-ada-Sweet Nell, won the First Division Handicap at Sandown Park, Melbourne, on November 27. The' .high-priced English stallion, I Bronziim, imported to' Australia by ! Mr S. Hordcrn, was represented by his first winner on November 27, when the two-year-old colt Bruck won the Nursery Handicap at Moortmeld, Sydney. Styria, the dam of Brack, is by Haut Brion—Trieste, by Chester— Tempo'. ! Multiply will not bo racing at any of the holiday meetings, as he has been | blistered and turned out for a spell. ' Chortle will probably be a competitor at the Manawatu Racing Club's summer meeting, while he may be seen out at Marton a week later. His Eminence broke down while racing at Woodville last week, and will require a lengthy spell. It is unfortunate for his connections to have to miss the holiday meetings, as the son of Hieraroh —Merry.Soult was in excellent form. The Wadrarapa horses, Sir Solo and ! Red Ribbon, have arrived 1 at Ellerslie to fulfil engagements at the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting. It was rumoured in Auckland last weak that L. H. Hewitt had been engaged to ridie Colonel Soult in the Auckland Cup. There appears to be nothing in it, however, as it is understood that C Browne has been definitely retained to steer the son of Soult At latest accounts Hewitt was still in Sydney, but it would be no surprise if be were to pay a visit to New Zealand. Reports from the north state that Balboa is being freely talked about iu connection with the- Auckland Cup. The Auckland horse Rupahu, who was successful at the recent Takapuna meeting, will probably visit Awapum this month, to fulfil his engagement m the Manawatu Cup, Wi which he is weighted' at 7.3.

RACING AND THE WAR,

DISCUSSION BY SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

REDUCTION URGED. [From Oua Coi?nEsro>-DF.XT.] TIMARU, December 11, A special meeting of tho South Canterbury Jockev Club was held this afternoon, to discuss a motion, of which Mr A. Scott had given notice, to the effect that tho Racing Conference should bo asked to stop racing in the Dominion. There were about sixty members present. Mr Scott urged that tho discontinuance of racing would bring about good results and he was sure owners would not raise objections. Of the men employed in connection with racing, many would be retained and many would be set free to enlist or take up other useful work. Economically rscing caused waste and the war was demonstrating that people ought to work longer hours and take fewer holidays. South Canterbury could set a good example by urjring discontinuance. Mr E. R. Guinness, who seconded the motion, said that a referendum of the Dominion would give an overwhelming vote against racing at the present time. Mr W. R. M'Laren said that it was unseemly that racing should go on at a critical timo in the nation's history and he threatened to resign from tho club if the motion were not carried. Mr G. S. Cray moved an amendment, urging reduction rather than discontinuance of racing. Ho said that racing Was interfering with tho industrial production of tho Dominion and he thought race meetings should be confined to statutory holidays*. Already on some holidays ten or twelve meetings were held in ono day. Mr Cray's amendment was seconded by Mr J. Hole, and Mr Scott withdrew his motion in favour of tho amendment. Mr H. Lowry, chairman of the club, spoke against tho motion, urging that there was no occasion fo.' New Zealand to do what the Old Country and Australia had not found it necessary to dn. An 'amendment, to the effect that the matter should be discussed twelye months hence, was defeated, and Mr Cray's motion was carried by a large majority.
