MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
«. CHBTSTCHURCH. Mr H. W. Bishop. S.M., presided on Saturday at a sitting of the Magistrate's Court. John Scott pleaded guilty to charges of being found drunk in Oxford terrace, aiid of committing a breach or his prohibition order. He was fined 10s. in default forty-eight hours imprisonment, on each charge. Hugh Andrew Upritchard was charged on three informations, with stealing, at Oxford, on October 25, gig harness valued at £9 10s, the property of Thomas J. Frame; stealing gig harness at Horrelville, on October -U. valued at £-1. the property ot William Thomas Dennis; stealing gig harness valued at £4. at Swannanoa, on October 23. the. property of Miles Vera I; stealino- a set of harness at Mandeville, on October 23, the property of a person or persons unknown; and witn stealing, at Cust, on September is, three draught-horse collars, the property of John Fraser, valued at £- 18s. He elected to be dealt with summarilv, and pleaded gnilty to each chaipv Chief-Detective Herbert said that accused had been in the habit oi going to country places stealing harness and selling it. Pie had been making a wholesale business oi it. Accused had been previously oonvicteed m 1914. Mr Bishop inflicted sentences of six months' imprisonment with hard labour on cadi charge, the terms to run concurrently; except on two charges, which would run cumulatively, thus making the total term of imprisonment twelve months. Accused asked for leniencv and to be given a chance of enlisting, but the appeal was not granted.
