Tho Hon J. Allen, Minister of Defence, will arrive in Christchurch from tho south by the second express tonight, and will go on to Wellington.

The Hon G, W. Russell, Minister of Internal Affairs, was kept busy in Christchurch again ye.terday with public and private deputations, the last ono leaving his rooms in the Government about G p.m. Ho left in the evening for AYellington. On Friday ho will visit Auckland. Ho will return to Wellington ou Monday, will loavo there on Monday evening for Christchurch, and on 'luesday, morning will pa.s through this city on his way to Dunedin, where he will take part in the welcome to the wounded men on the Willocbra.

Sir E. O. Gibbes, Secretary for Education, arrived from Wellington yesterday.

Dr Gunn, lady medical inspector of schools, has been accepted for service at tho front.

At the eud of the week Sir Joseph Ward will pay a visit to Auckland and afterwards come south.

The Rev Father Malonoy, of Wanganui, has been appointed Roman Catho. lie chaplain on the hospital ship Marama.

The Otugo University Council has appointed Mr H. 1). Bedford Professor of iiconomics and History, at a salary of £7OO per annum. Mr F. H. Warner, master of the Loburn School, underwent an operation for appendicitis on Saturday, and is now progressing towards recovery. Bombardier A. C. Macdonald, tho well-known Christchurch and South Island footballer, who went to the front as a gunner in the second howitzer reinforcements, has received a commission in his battery.

At last night's meeting of the Drainage Board, Mr A. L. T. Jones wrote, resigning his position as Sinking Fund Commissioner to the board on account of his projected departure from Christchurch. The resignation was accepted with regret, and Air J. M'Gibbon was elected to the position.

Last evening a number of the friends of Miss Oara Rogers, a member of the Volunteer Sisterhood were gathered at the Rangiora railway station to bid her good-bye on her departure for Weil.ngLon' en route for Alexandria. The Mayor (Mr 0. L Jennings) on behalf of the townspeople wished her t!"Jspecd and a safe return, and -Councillors W. M'Gruor and F. B. Lane also expressed good wishes. Turce Hearty cheers were given for Miss Rogers as the train left the platform.
