H'iMTTAXGrs ROUGH TRIP. After a round trip of eleven day* from Wellington the Chatham If lands Fishing Company'* Himitung' returned to Lyttelton vesterday. and as the outcome r,f ike recent bad weather Hie vessel received :t sever* buffeting. The Hiniitengi made her departure from Wellington on February '», at. 10.40 p.m., and after experiencing variable weather arrived at Wsita.ngi nt 7.30 a.m. on February 12, departure being taken for Owenga the same day. Mower Pot was reached the following day. There was a heavy sea Tunning at that time, and it was found necessary to anchor off the south end of Pitt Island. At 3.20 p.m. u, strong gslo sprang up from the. south, and a* nightfall drow oti the sen increased in fury, accompanied l'jy vain and hail squalls. Ah a further precaution the vessel went to sen. At 7.15 p.m. on Fecbruary H she relumed to Flower I'ot, but owing to the state of the water no work could be done. Two hours later the sea moderated n, little and work wa.s resumed. During the afternoon the wind increased, mid. as the sea became rough, it wl 's decided to go to WaikarMor shelter. At midnight it rained heavily. The following dny the wind veered to the southwest, but departure was tuken for Owenga, which was reached about R a.m. The wind, although strong, was much more favourable and at 5 "••«• on February ]6 a departure was made for Pitt Island. On arrival at Flower I'ot the conditions were unfavourable for work, but an houi' later the weather subsided and landing operations were continued. Departure for Lyttelton was taken at 2.45 p.m. on Februury' IT and immediately the Himitangi ran into a strong north-west gale, accompanied by a high sea. which made the vessel pitch and toss about considerably. At neon the wind veered to tho south and the conditions became worse. At ibis period the Himitangi wax tossing about in gocd style, while her engines were racing, and constant attention had to bo paid to the sbeep. From this on tho weather became more favourable, and slow progress waß made until reaching Lyttelton yesterday. Tho v»ssel brought over fifteen passengers and about 800 sheep.

MISHAP TO THE DEFENDER. After loading at Kajaraea for Wellington the Defender, which arrived at the northern pert on Saturday, suffered a good deal_ of delay one way and another. In the first place she was detained inside Karamea owing to the Tin workable state of the bar. Eventually she managed to get out at 1.1.30 a.m. on Wednesday, and for a time made favourable progress. She was well on the wuy to Wellington, when suddenly a mishap, occurred to her boilers, placing the vessel in an awkward position. The Waver.ey, wheh left Wellington late on Wednesday night for Nelson and Hie West Coast, uappened to observe tho Defender's plight, aid went to her assistance, lowing the dis.bled steamer to shelter under Guard's tJp.nk. Here temporary repairs were effected, and the little steamer proceeded to Wellingwithout any further trouble. DALDOKCH'S ROUGH TRIP. Very rough weather was encountered in the Tssman Sea by the New Zealand Shipping Company's chartered steamer Daldorch, which arrived at Auckland on Wednesday iUon.real and Australian port?. The vessel fook about sewn and a half days to accomplish the distance of 1281 miles between .he two port?, or two days longer than is usual for a cargo steamer. For three days after clearing Sydney Beads the Daldorch had to steam against a heavy southerly galo, with mountainous head sea.-, causing her to roil to such an extent that the ship's company at, times feared that she would not recover. As the vessel had discharged most of her cargo in Australia, she was in light trim, and this caused the rolling to become pronounced. Great wavos dashed oveT her bows for three days, and the decks were consequently almost continuously under water. Very little progress was made during the height of the ;, r a!e, but fortunately no "damago was done on deck. On approaching the Aew Zealand coast the weather moderated considerably, and the vessel steamed ahead -t fu.l speed. Tho Daldorch should reach Lyttelton about Jiuvaday or Friday next.

After an absence of about twelve months *hl Union .Steam Ship Company's cargo -.teamor Waitomo arrived in port on Saturday afternoon, and, after being granted iirn.tique, was berthed in tho inner harbour. j.he VVaitomo loaded coal at Newcastle in

-lOvember and reached Penaitg on December 15, sailing again on December 29 for oingapore, which was reached two days later, aero the vessel loaded a, quantity of cargo and sailed on January 2 for Samarang, A-hsre eho arrived on January 5. On January 7 the Waitomo sailed for Bunbttry, which .vas reached on January 15, the voyage out jeing uneventful.

After chipping about 5000 tons of timber the Waitomo sailed on February 5 for Lyttelton. During the initial stages of flic journey tho vessel encountered light southeast winds and a moderate swell. On coming across tho Tagman sea tho Waitomo ran into fairly hoavy weather, particularly on February" 14 and 17, when a south-south-east gale raged. Two days later, however, tho conditions became more favourable, and the journey along the East Coast was uneventful. ' Tho Wailomo's cargo for Lyttelton includes 400,000 feet timber, 315 bund.es battens, 825 cases pines, 10 cases nutrnege, G 5 bago pepper, 1230 bags tapioca, 160 bags sugar, and 970 bales kapoc. Captain E. Harris is still in command, and associated with him are tho following officers:—Chief, Mr W. Martin; second, Mr J. W. Cameron-, third, Mr W. Whitofield; chief engineer, Mr J. Alexander; second, Mr T. Peters; third, Mr H. Isaac; and fourth, Mr H. Baker. Tho Waitomo is expected to sail for Wellington about Tuesday. SHIPPING NOTES. En ronte from Liverpool to Australian ports the Shaw, Savill and Albion lirior t-akeha left (Jape Town on Thursday last. Tho vessel sailed from the home port on January 26, and after discharging her trcight in Australia, will come across to New Zealand.

Mr Maplcson, second engineer of the Ngahero, who has been ashoro on sick leave, has rejoined his vessel, and Mr Al'Phoraon, acung second, has gone back t'> the Ngakuta. Mr M'Lean, having returned iroin holiday leave, is to join the Ngatoro at Napier to-day, Mr Broadley, second engineer, going on holiday. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's liner Corinthic, which was due to sail for London ou Thursday next, will not now teavo Wol ington until Friday.

Latest advice states that the Union Stoam Ship Company's chartered steamer Keishin Maru should reach Wellington about March 11. The vessel is from Pacific Slope ports, and has a full cargo on board. At 1 p.m. on Friday tho Union Steam Ship Company's intercolonial liner Moeraki sailed from _ Sydney for Wellington and Lyttelton, being due *t the- former port on Tuesday morning. She has 108 passengers on board, and also about 500 tons of general cargo.

The Norwegian barque Sator, which visited Lyttolton in June 1905, as the British ship Earnoch, and loaded wool on behalf of the New Zealand Shipping Company, loft Busselton, Western Australia, on Thursday last with «. cargo of 667,000 ieet of jarrah for Lyttelton. The vessel sho.ild reach port in the course of about throe weeks. The. Sator is built of iron, and is of 1226 tons gross register. She was built' at Dumbarton in 187", and is 237 ft long, 35ft 7in wide, and 21ft Sin deep. She is commanded by Captain Beckinan.

The New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Eoionia called at Capo Town on Wed. nesday last and resumed her voyage from London to tho Dominion later. She Is expected at Wellington about March 14, and Lyttelton a week later. The Commonwealth and Dominion liner Star of Australia, which left London on January 1 foe Australian and New Zealand ports, nrnrcd at Melbourne on Thursday. The vessel will subsequently visit Sydnev, Auckland tod Wellington being due" at the lastnamed port, about March 11, est advice from Wellington Mates that the New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Buahino is expected at Wellington from London, via Hobart, to-morrow morning, and under the circumstances her mail* and passengers should reach Lyttelton on Wednesday mornißß. The Ruahine will probably arrive at Lyttelton about tho end of this week.
