BOROUGH COUNCILS.

SPREYDON. Tho Spreydon Borough Council met last evening; present —Councillors Clark (chairman), W. H. Winsor, T. Woods, L. Hayes, A. Manhiro, D. Sykes, S. A. Hancock and G. H. Rudd. Tlie Works Committee recommended that asphalt should be laid on the ground in front ,of the Council office and on the paths of the adjoining house; that the Council should consider a scheme for enlarging the office buildings; that Rose ‘ Street should be metalled as suggested by the Mayor; that tho offer of Messrs Smart, Lister and'Leslie to provide free of charge washed sand and shingle necessary for a concrete channel in front of their properties on the River Road should 1.9 accepted and the work done forthwith; that Mr Smart’s tender for supplying washed shingle at 2s 9d per cubic yard should be accepted. It was decided that the clause relating to tho improvement of the’ Council buildings should be referred back to the Works and Building Committee to bring down an estimate of the oost of the work, and that the asphalting in front of the office be held, over in the meantime. The report as amended was adopted. It was decided that the Works Gom-' mittoo have power to act in regard to metalling Lyttelton Street. The Finance Committee reported that Councillor Woods had been appointed chairman of the committee. The report was adopted. The By-laws Committee recommended ( that the following proposed by-lawa should bo passed:—(l) In all future subdivisions within the Borough where land is cut up and a new street formed the frontage of any section must not be less than 50ft with an area of not less than 30 perches; (2) The frontage of any section facing any street that is already formed, kerbed and channelled shall not bo less than 44ft, with an area of not less than 20 perches, provided that where the area is a quarter" of an acre or more facing any street already formed, kerbed and channelled tho frontage may be reduced to 40ft. Tho report was adopted. The Tramway Board wrote asking the Council to reconsider its decision nob to collect the tramway rate this year, and pointing out that the Board had power ,to collect the rate and charge it against the Spreydon ratepayers —a very expensive process. The letter was referred to that Finance Committee. The finance report showed the receipts since the previous meeting to have been £9 12s 2d, and the credit balance on the General Account £aiA> 5s 9d. On the Loan Account the receipts were £1 106 and the credit balance was £34 8s lOd. Accounts amounting to £3OO 12s 2d wero passed for payment, being £172 7s 7d on the general accounts and the balance on the loan account.
