THE SLEEPER CAR.
WHERE SHOULD IT BE? FRONT, MIDDLE OR BACK OF THE TRAIN. Tlie proper position for a >eeper car in a train was discussed at the meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday, when the chairman (Mr R. Moore) moved a vote of sympathy with the relatives of those who were killed in the collision on the North Island Main Trunk line. Mr Kaye seconded the motion, and said that he thought the Board should recommend that the sleeper should not be placed jn the front of the train. It might he put in the centre of. the train at night, at any rate, even if it was not convenient to have it there in the day-time. Mr M. J. Miller said that his wife and he had refused to go in a sleeping car simply because it was in the i front of the train. It was placed there j merely as a matter of convenience to ! the railway people. It was the worst , place for it. Tlie motion was carried, members standing. Mr Kaye moved that the attention of the authorities should be drawn tfi tho points ho. had raised: Mr 11. Friedlander seconded the mo«' tion. Mr J. J. Dougall said that it was an even chance whether a train was struck from the front or the back. It seemed to him to bo a kind of panic suggestion, and he thought that it would be better for the Board to leave the matter alone. . ~ Mr Kaye said that it certainly would be safer to place the sleeping car in tba> middle of the train. The motion was carried.
