MR MASSEY’S MEETING.

TO THE ICDITOK. Sir, —In your issue of to-day appears a letter over the signature of Mr David Jones in reference to the above, in which there appeared the following words: “ You appear to think that wo follow the same tactics that your party followed in connection with the meeting that was to be held in the Choral Hall by Sir J. G. Ward, if the weather was not suitable for the open air. Thoy issued tickets for platform and side entrance.”

As tho person wholly and solely ieeponsible for tho arrangements made on the occasion above referred to, I would ask the favour of a little of your valuable space, in order to set Mr Jones right in his statement. As a matter of fact no. tickets were issued admitting to tho “side entrance,” the doors of which were, never opened nor intended to bo opened during the whole of the evening.

It will probably interest Mr Jones to learn that considerably under 100 platform tickets, an against the 4(10 issued by him a year ago for Mr Massey’s meeting, were issued by me, and these were sent to gentlemen occupying prominent public or semi-public positions in this community. I have before me as I write a complete list of the names and professional positions of these gentlemen, the total number so issued being exactly fiftythree. The wording on the curd was “ Admit to stage entrance

and platform at Choral Hall.” This list is freely open to inspection bv Mr Jones or anyone accredited by him to make tho examination or. bis behalf. I may explain further, for the information of Mr Jones and others, that Sir Joseph Ward delivered his address hero under the auspices of the Progressive Liberal and Labour Association of Canterbury, and that consequently members of that Association were afforded the opportunity of entering tho hall by the stage and pintform entrance, but only on production of thoir membership cards. In conclusion, T beg to commend to the consideration of the promoters cf the meeting to be addressed by Mr Massey to-morrow evening that tliero were 'some points, “tactics” Mr Jones calls them, in connection with the meeting addressed by Sir Joseph “Ward a month ago, that liis (Mr Jones's) party might very profitably follow, one of which is to invite Kir Massey to address an open-air meeting in Victoria. Square from tho Band Rotunda. and thus afford every elector of Christchurch an opportunity of being present and bearing the address of the right honorable coruloinan.—l am ' CtC -’ 0. IT. GILBY, Hon Secretary, Progressive Liberal end Labour K Association. 1 Juno 4.
