MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.

The Christchurch Children's Peace Society held a social gathering at the YV.C.T.U. rooms to welcome Mr and Mrs C. R. N. Maekie. Mrs Bradley presided, and, despite the bad weather, there was a good attendance of both children aaid friends. Games were played, and several of the children contributed songs and recitations. After supper Mr Mackie gave a short address. A large amount of interest was taken by the members of the St Albans Methodist Literary Society in a Mock Parliament which provided the programme on Tuesday evening. Messrs W. Jones, W, Harrison,-m. Hancox and A. D. Hassall respectively represented the Reform, Liberal and Social Democratic and Independent-Liberal Parties, and were allowed fifteen minutes each to declare their views. _ At question time the wit and ingenuity of the candidates were sorely taxed but on the whole they came through the ordeal without much loss of prestige. The chairman, the Rev H. E. Bellbouse, announced the "election" of Mr Hancox, Avho stood as an Independent. The half-yearly summoned meeting of the U.A.O D. Oak of Sydenham Lodge. No. .15, was held in the Friendly Societies Hall, Hazeldean Road, Sydenham, on Wednesday. A.D. Bro Nickerson presiding. Officers were.nominated as follows: —A.D., Bro Gladwin; V.A., Bro Qumton; secretary, Bro Cameron; treasurer, Bro J. Fisher; 1.G., Bros Armstrong, and M'Kenna; 0.G., Bro Philpott; A.D. Bards, Bros Hulbert and Ellis; V.A, Bards, Bros Campbell and Culley; minute secretary, Bro Edmond; auditor, Bro Hardy. At the monthly meeting of the Addington Band of Hope a good programme was presented to a large audience, mostly comprised of children. Mr J. M'Cullough gave a temperance address, and items were contributed by Misses G. Burns, J. Hetherington, M. Hulbert, Messrs Gandell and Craig and several Belfast friends. Eleven children decided to take the pledge.' The Addington Burgesses' Association held a euchre tournament and dance in the Oddfellows' Hall, Selwyn Street, on Thursday. The following were the winners in the tournament:—, Ladies—Mrs Ward 1, Miss M. Dunkley 2; booby prize, Miss . Robbins. Gentlemen—Mr J. M'Cracken 1, Mr Ransley 2; booby prize, Mr Phil Jones. Dancing was kept up till an early hour tp music supplied by Mr R. Woods. The opening social of the Heathcote Literary ana Debating Society _ was held last week. The president (Mr James Weir) was in the chair, and there was a large attendance. _ An excellent programme of musical items was contributed by Misses Gordon, Queree(2), Thomson and Weeks. Mrs Woods, arid Messrs Doolan, lUavel, Grimmer (2),. Simmonds, Weston and \ Worgan. The anniversary social of the Pride of Linwood Juvenile Rechabito Lodge was held in the Leed Street Hall on Wednesday evening, Brother E. Leaver presiding over a large of members, parents and friends. Recitations were given bv Miss Hawkins, Sisters C. Kent, P. Hollander, D. Twyford, I. Leaver, F. Smith, M. Rowland, E. Rattray, D. Burgess and Brothers W. J. Fowler, A. Kent, G. Rowlands and R. Twyford, and vocal and instrumental items by Miss V. Haigh, Sisters Heyder, P. Hollander, F. Rattray and Brothers Heyder and W. J. Fowler. The annual report presented by Sister Bielby Avas considered most encouraging. An official visit was paid during the evening by the District Chief Ruler, Brother R. N. Taylor, who congratulated the Tent on the satisfactory progress made and save an address on the emblem of the Order. Brother Taylor also presented a prize to Sister Irene Leaver for introducing five candidates that evening. Brothers J. Smith (Sydenham), W. Saunders (Addington), and W. J. Fowler (St Albans) briefly expre6sod their congratulations and good wishes. The results of the sixth night's play in the Christchurch Friendly Societies' Card Association's tournament were as follow:—Mistletoe beat Pioneer by 23 games to 18; Queen's Own beat City of Christchurch by 24 games to 19; Washington beat Anchor hy 27 games to 23; Ivy of Linwood beat Addington by 25 games to 17. Perseverance v. Star of Canterbury was. not played, and St Albans had a bye. A ladies' return progressive euchre match was held in the Papanui Social Hall on Thursday evening, when there was a large attendance. Miss M'Cullough and Mrs Cook won the ladies' prizes, and Messrs J. R. M'Cullough and Best-Keeper the men's prizes. At the conclusion of the games the prizes were presented by Mrs G. Borgfeldt. The room was then cleared, and dancing took place till the early hours. The Star of Opawa Lodge 1.0.0. F., held its usual fortnightly meeting in St Mark's Schoolroom on Thursday night, Brother Harrington, N.G., presiding over a fair attendance of members and visiting brothers. A vote of thanks accorded the visitors was replied to by brothers on behalf of Star of Linwood and Star of Sydenham Lodges. Accounts passed for payment amounted to 18s 6d. The receipts for the evening were £2 Os 6d. The quarterly meeting of the Ridgley Lodge was held in the Ridgley Hall, Armagh Street, on Wednesday evening, Brother G. Morrow, N.G., presiding over a large attendance. Dr Pairman was elected as one of the medical officers of the Lodge. The first nomination of officers resulted in Brother W. Greanslade being nominated for N.G.; Brothers E. Gott and G. Richard for V.G.; Brother W. Hunter for secretary; Brother E. Eldridge for recording secretary, and Brother L. White for treasurer. An invitation was accepted from the Washington Lodge to plav a card match at its hall, Selwyn Street, on Monday, June 1. The receipts for the evening amounted to £145 12s 2d. The third annual meeting of the Younor Women's National Prohibition Guild was held in the W.C.T.U. Rooms on Monday evening, Mrs Joseph Wilson presiding. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted, and an ! address on "Women's Influence" was <dven by Mrs A. Toombes.
