The barque previously was reported to he afire twelve miles west of Mount Heomskirk. The Svenor was en route from Fremantle to Newcastle in ballast. W’hen twenty-two days out the ballast shifted, and she was thrown on her beam ends. The masts were cut away, and she drifted nearly a fortnight till she was sighted by the Wainui. An attempt to tow failed, and it was decided to abandon the vessel.

Prior to leaving, in order to prevent her being dangerous to navigation, the,Svenor was scuttled and set afire. The crew left in the boats and were picked up by tho Wainui.
