PIGEON SHOW.

CHRISTCHURCH CLUB’S FIXTURE.

THE OPENING DAY

The seventh annual show of the Christchurch Pigeon Club was opened yesterday afternoon by the Mayor (Mr H. Holland) in tho Alexandra Hall. The entries constitute a record, 540 being received as against 529 last year, a record up to that date. The exhibition taken generally is above tho usual standard, and some very fine displays have been arranged. Some of the older breeds of pigeons, pouters, fantails, and Jacobins, which were so much in evidence a few years ago, have come back into popularity and a largo number of.entries in those classes have been received. The magpie entries are not so large as they were last year, but the section is a pleasing feature. of the show. Tho black classes especially make an excellent display. The tumbler pigeons aro also well represented, the black seifs making one of the best displays seen in Christchurch for some years. The red, yellow and mottled tumblers aro also well above the average. The collection of African owls is of commendable quality, conspicuous amongst this section being the recent importations of Air C. Ziesler, of Timaru. Another outstanding feature of tho show is the display of utility pigeons from the Shaftesbury Pigeon Ranch, owned by Mr J. Ashley, of New Brighton. This" variety of pigeon is of much heavier breed than the ordinary class, and they are bred for table purposes in addition to show purposes. The principal breeds among the display are the Carneaux and the Mondaines. All other classes of pigeon's are also well represented. Air Holland, in the course of a few remarks at tho opening of tho show, said he never had seen such an exhibition of excellent quality birds. He was of tho opinion that pigeon fancying was a fine, healthy and wholesome hobby, and deserved all the encouragement that could be given to it. There were a largo number of bird fanciers soending a great deal of time over the birds, and the show was a gratifying result of their labours. Ho was pleased also to see the largo number of entries, the sixty-four entries in the frilled pigeon class alono constituting a New Zealand record. Birds came from Melbourne and Sydney, whilo there were New Zealand entries from Onehunga to Invercargill. Mr Holland then declared the show open. The classes of working homers, racing homers and tho poultry section will he judged to-day. The show will bo open to-day and this evening.
