THE RAILWAY SERVICE.
[Fbom Oor. Cobjhcsfondbnt.] MASTERTON, March 24. ' Some of the Government departments have apparently a sense of dealing out J'ustice which is peculiar to themselves. ?he Supreme Court yesterday afternoon was given a sample of it. In giving (( Jjis evidence in a case in which refer...ence was made to certain railway customs, the stationmaster at Masterton stated that he was responsible for the \Whole working of the station in every detail. ".,. The Crown Prosecutor said: "But surely the Department does not hold you responsible for all the work of the •'officials on the station at the one time. '<ff a dozen men are working at different places on the station you cannot see /them all at once." £.! "lam held responsible all the same for those men's work," said the stationmaster. "On one occasion, I may remark, a breach of a tablet regulation occurred in the middle of the night when I was in bed, yet the Department held me responsible for negligence of the employee, and fined me £2."
