VICTORIA RACING CLUB.

THIRD DAY,

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received March 5, 9.40 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March 5. The autumn meeting of the Victoria Racing Club was continued to-day. A big-crowd enjoyed another fine day and some good racing, though the fields were small- The winners of five races were anticipated successfully by the public. Jolly Beggar probably was the best mile horse racing, but was closely pushed by Popinjay. Mountain Princess, contrary to expectations, after brilliant track gallops, again was out of a place. Audacity's failure was very disappointing to the stable, especially after the Cup failure. The Loch Plate was rather a farce. Radnor’s brilliance frightened off competitors, leaving only two to compete for places. Parisian ran well, but his effort was hopeless. Radnor looked good for another mile. Kelly broke a collarbone when The Vet fell, otherwise there was no mishap. Tho Go-vernor-General's party again attended. Tho dressing was brilliant, and was marked by an absence of freak dresses. Flower of the West, who won the Peninsula Clip at the Akarca County meeting yesterday, is an English-bred marc, who was imported by Mr A. Boyle. She was raced for a time over short courses, and showed fair form, but yesterday's effort was her first over a journey, and her performance was very creditable. The train arrangements in connection with yesterday's raco meeting at Motukarara were open to criticism in'ir.oro than one respect. The second special train from Christchurch in the morning was late in leaving, and its passengers were barely in time to witness the opening event. On the return journey the trftiu was delayed for some time at Lincoln. and was about twenty minutes late in reaching the city, while it was inconveniently crowded with passengers. Mr J. B. Reid's throe-year-old colts Mowbray and Salzburg were shipped to Wellington on Monday night, and havo gone into J. H. Prosser's stable at Pori run.

Cable service between Now South Wales ami New Zealand opened February 20. 1870.
