LAWN TENNIS.

CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. A meeting of delegates to the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association was held last night,. Mr W. Goss presiding. Some discussion took place on the point raised by an Avonside delegate that the combined doubles at the Canterbury dhampionship had been decided on advantage sets, notwithstanding that the entry fonn provided “No advantage sets.” The result, he stated, had been that the eventual runners-up had aotually won the eleventh game in the deciding set, and vet had lost the match. On the other hand, it was stated, that after the tenth game the umpire had ruled that the set was an advantage set, and it was claimed that in the circumstances the game was not open for review, especially as the runners-up had declined to protest. It was decided to take no action. . The Managing Committee of the South Canterbury competition for the Ross trophy wrote, stating that as several of the Timaru players stood out above other clubs’ players, interest in the tropliv had diminished, and it was suggested"that the trophy should bo for junior competition, and that certain players should be barred. The suggestion was endorsed, subject to agreement by the Timaru Club. It was resolved to opposo a motion, of whicli notice had been given for the next meeting of the New .Zealand Assotiation, that a professional coach 6liould be engaged by the New Zealand Association, to be available for all affiliated clubs. It. was further resolved to point out that if coaches were to be engaged the matter should be left to provincial Associations. A proposal that the Canterbury Association should offer its support to a proposed tour of a German team, to bo brought out to Australia in October, was strongly supported by the chairman, and it was eventually resolved a on the motion of Mr J. Longton, to offer £6O for .a Christchurch match. The New Zealand Association, in acknowledging receipt of £62 7s 9d from tlio Canterbury match against the British toam, stated that no player’s expenses had been included, and tlio Association wished to know what view Canterbury took of the charge of £6 7s lOd made against Canterbury in respect of the expenses of Swanston and Fisher to Christchurch. It was resolved not to pay the amount. The chairman proposed that an effort should be made to popularise tennis through the newspapers during the coming season. He stated that although tennis players were numerous, less tennis news appeared in Christchurch than in any other centre. Tho chairman and Messrs W. Berry and F. Cooper wero appointed a Publicity Committee, to supply reports of club matches in town and country. On Mr J. H. Kirk’s motion, it was resolved to give £2 2s towards tlio cost of a shield for tho B Grade competition.
