[Pm Press Association.] WELLINGTON, August 22. a number of Wellington merchants Interested in the export trade to \ ancouver waited on Mr M’Lennan (oi .tho head office of the Union Steam Ship Company) and Mr 0. Kennedy (Wellington manager) to-day, with regard to the new conditions of freight and space for butter and meat for VanNathan pointed out that tho conditions under which Wellington nrochautd were askeu to tender -or space this year made it practically prohibitive for them to continue in the business. . . , ~ , r , T In the course of his reply Mr M Lennan said that the Union Company was doing its best to meet tho trade in the matter of freight arrangements. Trade had grown enormously and the company was providing this season refrigerated space equal to 200,000 boxes of butter on the Vancouver steamers. This was expected to be much m excess of tho demand, as last season the total shipment was 100.000 boxes. Vancouver steamers would be able to cope with all traffic, although tho space they had to provide under contract witn the Now Zealand Government was very much less. The company would consider the matter or postponing the date of receiving applications for space till-a later date than the first of September, but it would have to get the Government s sanction and also the sanction of shippers in other parts of New Zealand to tins. Possibly the date could bo made the first of October. With, regard to the matter of the exporter paying _ the coastal freight to Auckland, he stated that it was the custom m other countries.
