The •tart was delayed for forty minutes to enable the Australians to attend the funeral of Mr E. Hume. The following are the teams: — Australia—S. E. Gregory, C. G. glacartney, W. Bardeley, G. R. Haztt 2 H. Webster J. W. M'Laren, D. Smith, C. B. Jennings. R. B. Mmnett, 8. H. Emery and E. R. Mayne. Essex—J. W. H. Douglas, F. L. Fane, C. M'Gahey, P. Perrin, W. Reeves, W. Mead, F. H. Gillingham, A. 0. Russell, J. Freeman, C. P. Buckenham and Hills. Douglas won the toss and elected,to bat! The wicket was very easy. Russell and Douglas opened the innings, Emery and M'Laren being the bowlers. A separation was effected when the total had reached 34, Russell being caught in the slips. Perrin was the incomer and a lengthy partnership followed, adding 160 runs, the first fifty being made in fifty minutes and the eentury in 105 minutes. Douglas played very carefully, taking no risks, H 0 scored numerous singles, and was *'■ barracked " by the crowd for his careful tactics. He gave chances at 16. and 18, and reached 60 as a result of 165 minutes' play. Perrin reached his century in 135 minutes. He gave a magnificent all-round display. , He was not troubled by the bowling, and his innings, which was chancelese, included ten fours. Douglas and Fane made another fine stand. The latter out and drove splendidly and scored 63 in 85 minutes. His performance was marred by a chance at 49. The first wicket fell at 34 and the second at 194. The attendance numbered 3000. The " Sydney Morning Herald," commenting on the test match, says that the Australian side achieved reKnits which justified its most partisan supporters, and astounded those who hoped for little.
