THE HOCKEY GIRLS.

, REQUEST FOR DRESSING-ROOM IN THE PARK. DISCUSSED BY DOMAINS BOARD. One or two members of the Domains Board were ungallant enough yesterday to oppose an application by the Canterbury Ladies’ Hockey Associatioh for permission to erect a pavilion in the North Park for the ever-increasing army of hockey girls who play there on Saturdays. It was a persuasive application, too, suggesting the absolute need for dressing-rooms, and promising that if the young ladies were successful in raising tho funds the new structure would be a credit to fche'park and an Ornament to the city. Mr George Harper said that the success of the application would depend on the 6ite of the pavilion and the design. The chairman (Mr H. J. Beswick) said that the Board had already passed a .motion that no further permits should be granted for any enclosure in the Park. Mr W. H. Cooper said that he had supported the motion and still supported the principle. The Board would have to go cautiously, for until it knew where the pavilion was to be situated and what it would be like no reply could be <dven to the letter. Mr S. A. Staples said that the motion referring to enclosures did not include pavilions. Hockey players should have some facilities for changing their clothes, and he would move that permission should he granted subject tothe passing of the plans by the Board. The chairman remarked that he did not oppose the motion, but had merely pointed out the necessity for rescinding one motion before a contrary one was considered. Air A. D. Hart said that while he sympathised with the hockey girls ho was opposed to the erection of any more buildings. The public were being ousted from tho Park, for once a pavilion was erected the ground near it became practically private. _ * The secretary read a motion passed on January 4, 1910, on Mr Cooper s motion to the effect that no further building should be Greeted on the Park. In reply to a question he said. that the hockey girls were looking well ahead, and did not expect to have funds for a pavilion for two venrs. By that time the grounds would have been levelled and grassed. The chairman ruled that no action could be taken until the motion had been rescinded. Mr Staples gave notice to rescind the motion, and grant _ permission for tho erection of the pavilion. It was decided to inform the Hockey Association of what had been done.
