Macartney joined his captain and a good partnership followed. When he had reached 28 Gregory skied Wass to deep point, but Jones missed it. Macartney played the off theory bowling skilfully, but it was some time before the bowlers found their length, and both batsmen took advantage of all chances of scoring given them. At 77 Gregory got l.b.w. to Iremonger, having made 36 in seventy minutes. His timing was rather uncertain. Macartney was then 24, and with. Minnett be brought up the century for eiglity-five minutes’ play, and in seventy minutes made his own total 50. As soon as he had settled down he gave a free exhibition of pulling and off driving. Minnett, after being badly missed at four from a ekier to short leg off Riley’s j bowling, was smartly caught at point by Iremonger. 122—3—18. Macartney and Mayne before lunch took the score to 135. ’

His innings contained eleven fours and lasted 115 minutes. 166—1—84. After the dismissal of Macartney the batting fell away. Mayne played a dull innings of 19, Matthews a quiet ono of 26, and Whittv hit three fours off his first over, but outside Macartney the batting was below expectations. Tlie innings lasted 230 minutes. Tho Notts bowling and fielding were only moderate at the start, but improved later on! The wjeket was drying and played easily. About 4000 were present when Notts went in. Hazlitt and Whitty were the first pair of bowlers. Both put on pace, and byes went to the boundary off each in the first two overs. Jones and G. Gunn were the batsmen. The former was yorked by Hazlitt at 23. The bowlers then.changed ends, and Hardstaff was smartly stumped at 30. The light at this stage was bad. J. Gunn followed. At 48 M’Laren relieved Whitty. Hazlitt was awkward to play and the fielding was good. - G. Gunn, after taking seventy minutes to compile 22, was bowled in M’Laren’s second over in attempting to glance him. Payton was immediately caught at point. Four wickets were thus down for 55, but. J. Gunn and Crawford played out time, the latter’s 14 being all made in one over from Hazlitt. The stumps were drawn with the score at 94 for four wickets. The following are the scores:— AUSTRALIA.
