Tho chairman was appointed to represent the Board at the meeting of local bodies to bo held at Christchurch for the purpose of appointing delegates to the Dominion Conference called to discuss the Local Government Bill. Mr Revell urged, that the Board’s delegate should be instructed to do his utmost to enable the Board to preserve its identity. Under the Bill it was proposed to do away with a number of Harbour Boards, and tho elimination of the Waimakariri Board would put an end to any aspirations the members might have in regard to the. development of the port ,of Kaiapoi. Mr Wylie said that unless a strong protest was made the smaller Boards would be wiped out. The chairman expressed the opinion that where a Harbour Board was representative of several local bodies its identity would not suffer under the proposed Bill. Mr A. Johnson wrote with reference, to his account for towing, which the Board had held over. Ho contended that the charges were reasonable. After some discussion it was decided to pay the account. Tho Shipping and Trading Company wrote, stating that tho question of erecting a store on tho wharf was being considered by the directors. The difficulty as that the shed would bo of little practical service unless the implied promise of the Board toi deepen the channel alongside the wharf was carried out. Messrs Edmonds and Revell said the Finance Committee had interviewed the company on tho matter and were hopeful that a proposal acceptable to both parties would be made. The harbourmaster reported that tho bar was improving. On May 2 soundings showed 7ft two hours before high water, equal to 9ft at high water. One of the fender piles at tne training wall required attention. The report was adopted.
