Davis's yard at Blaekwall were eclipsed lately, a fivdncy paper, when the largest vessel buiK in tho State left the ways. Tho new vessel was named ths Red Pine—a useful type of steamer, intended for the New Zealand coastal Itrefle. She is not only tho largest but tho

finest vessel of her class built in the State. Tho vo3sel is intended for the Red Pino Steam Ship Company, Limited, of Westland, Now Zealand, of which Mr E. A. Wickos is managing director. Sho is for the timber trade from the port of Greymouth to various porta on tho N«w Zealand coast. Her dimensions are as follows: —Lepgthb.p., 147 ft; length over ajl, 153 ft; moulded breadth, 29ft; moulded depth, 10ft 9in; dmft full loaded, about 9ft 6in. Tho boiler and main engines will bo supplied r.nd fitted by Messrs Wildridgo and Sinclair, of Pitt Street, Sydney. The machinery consists of a ret of compound surface condensing engines, with cylinders 16in and S3in in diameter, with 21in stroke. Sho will have a multitubular boiler, with three furnaces, the working boiler pressure being 1301 b Helical ger.rod steam winches and a steam windlass will, be'fitted. On completion ths vessel will be fitted throughout by Mcssts Warburton snd--«Fr*nki»with elcctrioi light. The vessel is not intended for passenger traffic. All have- been carried out by Captain S. Willis, under whoso supervision tho vessel has been built. Mt A. H. Hunter, chiff engineer, will supervise sb regards the engines Mid boilers, the plans being drawn by Mr Walter Reeks. The vessel has been built of hardwood, with Oregon deck:, and latest cargo discharging gear. She has a fore-peak and tipping tanks holding 29 tons, and two pfter tanks-' for fresn water of 10 tons esch. Tho vo3Sel left the ways in splendid stylo, and was gracefully christened by Mrs Ivan Nelson, wife of Mr Ivan Nelson, of Messrs Nelson a<-d Robertson. After the launch Captain Willis propoced " Success to the Red Pine," and congratulated Mrs Nelson on the success of the launch. The toast of "The Builder " was also criven 'by Mr Ivan Nelson. Tho new vessel with ijft .".towed to Sydney to havo her • machinery fitted. She is without doubt a fino type of steamer, and reflects credit on the builders, owners and nil concerned.
