COUNTY COUNCILS.

WAIMAIRI. A meeting of the Waimairi County Council was held last night; present:— Messrs S. A. Staples (chairman), F. Sisson, S. Bullock, W. .1. Walter. J. Hauna, W. Hall, R. Falk, R. W. Hawke, W. Nicholls and W. P. Spencer. A letter was received from the Paparua County Council, stating that in view of the meoting of representatives of all local bodies called to select seven delogates to represent tho province at the conference in Wellington, the Pa-pa-rua County Coxmcil proposed to call a meeting of county representatives on Saturday, May 11, 'at the offices of the Heatheoto County Council, to discuss tho position as concerning counties. Tlie letter stated that several local bodies wholly unaffected by the Bill had been asked to send delegates to the meeting in Ohristchuroh, and the position would be discussed at the Council's conference. The chairman and Mr Bullock were appointed delegates of the Waimairi Council at thox proposed conference, a.nd also at the general meeting of delegates, should the county decide to be represented. A deputation from residents of Harewood waited on the Council to ask that a special drainage rate levied over the Harewood district should be put on a differential basis. The chairman explained that at tho present time this was illegal, but a Bill would soon he passed to legalise it. Mr S. Early wrote with reference to the bad state of the road from North Christchurch to North New Brighton. The matter was referred to the engineer. A letter was received from the State Guaranteed Advances Office, stating that the applications of the Council for loans of £6BO and £230 would not be granted as the Council had already had loans far in excess of tho limit of £SOOO. The engineer of the phristchurch Drainage Board wrote stating that the Board would contribute' £IOO as a contribution to the work of clearing the River Styx for the two years ended Starch 31, 1912. A request that the drains on each side of the Glandovey Road should bo attended to was referred to the engineer. Tho North New Brighton Burgesses' Association drew the attention of the Council to the dangerous state of the corner of Racecourse Road and River Road, and asked that a lamp should bo erected there, the Now Brighton Borough Council to contribute half the cost. The matter was referred to the engineor.

EYRE. The first meeting of the newly-con-stituted Eyre County Council was held last week; present:—Messrs R. Evans. R. 0. Dixon, C. M. Williams. J. Wright, F. G. Horrell and H. J. Horrell. Mr R. M. Wright, returning officer, took the chair. Mr Richard Evans was unanimously elected chairman for tho ensuing term. Mr Robert M. Wright was appointed county clerk 'and _ treasurer. The clerk* was appointed registrar of dogs and Messrs C. _ Hankius and W. Spriggs were appointed deputy-registrars of dogs and rangers on the same terms as formerly. Messrs Beswick and Harris wrote regarding the formation of a road through the Springbank estate and enclosed plans of culvert and levels and specifications of formation. It was resolved that they should arrange to take the chairman and clerk over the lino of. road to agree as to the site and tho provision for flood water. The Government statistician wrote asking for returns for statistics as provided by the Counties Act. The chairman of tho Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote stating a meeting of representatives of local bodies in North Canterbury would he held on May 13 to select seven delegates to attend a conference at Wellington to consider the provisions of tho proposed Local Government Bill. Messrs H. J. Hor- i rell and James Wright were appointed i to represent the Council at the meet-| ing of delegates. Messrs | Conlan forwarded leases of the Eyreton and Girder Bridge reserves for signature. It was resolved that tlio chairman should sign and seal tho leases on behalf of the Council. Mr W. G. Pearce ; wrote offering to supply poisoned grain, ■ but it was decided that poisoned wheat should be prepared by the Council and supplied to the ratepayers of the county free of charge. Mr Charles Clark, on behalf of Mr E. Kcvern, wrote complaining of projections on the south side of the River Eyre covered with gorse- and stating that there were a few places where the planting of willows would afford protection to the land. The matters were referred to Mr Dixon and the clerk to report. The Council decided to meet on the first Monday, in each month. The clerk was directed to write to tho District Engineer for Public Works stating that the Council was unanimously of opinion that a truss bridge, as designed by the Eyrc-ton Road Board surveyor, was fife most suitable for the district. The clerk was directed to obtain a suitable seal for the use of the Council, arrange for tho transfer of fire and accident insurance policies, write tw tho Land Board stating that fainis were being damaged by the water backing up in the north branch of the Waimakariri and invite tenders for the supply of shingle for repairs. It was decided that the clutirhinn and Mr Dixon, with the clerk, .should deal with the willows in the north branch of the Waimakariri. Mr J. M. Booker was appointed ponndkeeper and to work the horse p.nd cart mid do any general work. ! Mr George White was appointed to do general work in the eastern part of the county at 7s per day.
