The winter meeting of tho Forbury Park Trotting Club, held last week, will long be remembered among colonial trotting enthusiasts on account of the brilliant performances of the Ashburton mare Emmeline. On the first day, in an attempt to beat the track record, 2min 11 4-ssec, she paced a mile in 2niin 8 3-ssec, thus equalling the Australasian record established at Aldington lost year by tho stallion King Cole. On Saturday she added still further to her reputation by winning tho Winter Oats Handicap from scratch a,nd covering two miles in 4min SOsec. establishing a fresh Australasian record, the previous best being 4min 31sec by King Colo at Addington last August. Emmeline, who was bred at Ashburton by Mr R M'Donnell, who has trained and driven her in all her races, is a five-year-old mare by Rothschild, ono of the most successful sires of apeed producers that New Zealand has seen, her dam, Imperialism, being by Prince Imperial, ■ a very fast horso and the sire of a host of big! winners, from. Shamrock, by tho Traducer horse Dexter from a mare by Hornby. Emmcline's pedigree ia therefore rich in "successful trotting blood, besides having two thoroughbred strains through Traducer and Hornby, tho latter a Canterbury Derby winner, as was his sire, Songster, by Towton. Emmelino's form during the present season has been consistently good. She won a mile and a quarter raco at Addingtou in November, and was successful over a similar course at Ashburton on Boxing Day, after getting off very badly. A few weeks later, at the Forbury Park meeting in- January, she was beaten by a length in the Dunodin Oup Handicap, two miles, by Dilion Bell, to whom she w&3 conceding a second. At the Easter of the New Zealnnd Metropolitan Trotting Club she won the International Handicap, one mile And a quarter, conceding from four to seven seconds to her twelve opponents, which included some of tho best horses in the dominion. She showed a. wonderful burst of speed in the early stages of that raco, and after going hall a mile she was almost on tcrm3 with tho leaders, eventually running home an easy winner. Three days later, in the High Class Handicap, sho was responsible for another great effort.. She lost a"lot of ground in the first three furlongs through interference from Dillon Bell, but she • showed a groat burst of speed over the last half-mile, and though beaten by about two lengths by Discoverer, she covered tho mile in 2min 10 4-sscc. which is easily a race record for Now Zealand. After her two performances at Forbury Park this week Emmelino must be placed on tho highest pinnaclo as the beat harness performer ever seen in the dominion. She has not been over-raced, so that it would he no surprise to find her setting an even higher , mark before she retires from the race track. '

The Brisbane Thousand, which was decided on Saturday tit the Albion Park "Jookey Club's meeting, is one of the rich prkta provided by Mr J. Wren in his attempt to boom racing on his Queensland course, which is situated close to Brisbane. In. attracting e. field of twenty-four, the race must be held to have been a success. My Gavonni, the winner, carried 9st into second place in the corresponding event a year ago. Musket Belle, who won the Goodwood Handicap at the South Australian Jockey Club's meeting on Saturday, was a';BO successful in that event last year, it being her only winning performance in a busy season, and two years ago she won another sprint race at the South Australian Jockey Club's autumn fixture, so that she has shown a decided liking for events on that course in the autumn. Musket Belle is by the Carbine horse Pistol, an importation from England, who is now the leading sire in South Australia, her dam. Petlinga, being by Princo Consort (son of Bicbmond), from Toonketehcn, by Gang Forward—ParraTnatta, by Fisherman, from a mare imported to South Australia from New South Wales without a pedigree. Borosor, who finished second to Musket Belle in the Goodwood Handicap at the South Australian Jookey Club's meeting on Saturday, was one of the best two-year-olds in Australia last autumn. She made her first appearance in a handicap at Rosehill, which she won. At the autumn meeting of the Australian Jockey Club oho started four times, but ran very unluckily, finishing second to Gillamatong in the Sires' Produce Stakes, third to Posadas and Wilari in the Champagne Stakes, second to Jacamar in the Easter Stakes, and second to St Medoc in the Second Nursery Handicap, giving the winner 261 b. She met with a niishsp which prevented her from racing in tho early part of this season, but she has been all right ngnin for some time, and was a popular pick as a likely winner of a big sprint race before the closo of the season. She is by the successful sire Malster. all of whose Etock seem able to gallop, her dam being the New Zealand-bred Beresina, by Stepniak—Ambush, by Vanguard—Farrymaid. Beresina did her early racinjr in the colours of the late Mr G. G. Stead, but she showed moderate form till she. was taken to Australia by Messrs S. Nettlcfold and D. J. Price, for whom ehe won tho Oaklcigh Plate, a valuable sprint race at Caulficld. First Shot, who finished third in the Goodwood Handicap at the South Australian Jockey Club's meeting on Saturday, claims a pedigree of interest to New Zealand _ sportsmen. Her sire, Piato!, is an English-bred son of Carbine, while her dam, First Fleece, is by Carlyon—Golden Fleeco, a mare bred by Sir George Clifford, being a water tp Golden Vale (dam of Husbandman) ana Goldleaf (dam of Autumnus), by StonyhurstGolden Croot. , , Aryan, who sired the first andscconu horses home in the South, Australian St Leger on Saturday, is an English stallion, audi was imported to South Australia in. 1908, ao that he has quickly mado a reputation at the, etui He , 8 by Avr6hirei bv «a dam being Lady Alwyne, by C»»£L»£Florence Aislabie. Aryan, for.* X'^ h *J to St Alwyne (by St Fiusquin), the sire of L»dy Medallist ,
